My name is Maya and I am a self employed comic artist, illustrator, and musician.
I grew up in Houston, Texas, where I came down with a very bad case of art fever. According to my mom I was born with a pencil in my hand, but I don't like graphite much so I think it must have been a pen. I later moved to Minnesota for four years to attend the comic program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. I am currently living happily in Minneapolis, Minnesota with my wife and our two cats.
I have been drawing ever since I was first able to properly hold a pencil. I learned to love storytelling from a young age, both from novels and from comics, and I was always crafting comics in my head, but it wasn't until I was about seventeen that I decided to pursue this interest professionally. I now spend my days working from home to create my webcomic Monster Pop!, a multitude of illustrations, patterns, and merchandise, and occasionally I get the chance to make new music.
I have been featured on Comics Alliance, io9, Daily Dot, Ladies Making Comics, Autostraddle, Girls in Capes, and First Inkling, among other places. I've successfully run three Kickstarters to self publish my comics and I've been publishing my webcomic online since 2011.
Prints of my work are available upon demand.
