My name is Maya and I am a freelance illustrator, comic artist, and musician.
I grew up in Houston, Texas, where I came down with a very bad case of art fever. I then moved to Minnesota for four years to attend the comic program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. I am currently living happily in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I have been drawing ever since I was first able to properly hold a pencil. I learned to love storytelling from a young age, both from novels and from comics, and I was always crafting comics in my head, but it wasn't until I was about seventeen that I decided to pursue this interest professionally. Attending MCAD's comic program helped me achieve this goal.
I have been featured on Comics Alliance, io9, Daily Dot, Ladies Making Comics, Autostraddle, Girls in Capes, and First Inkling. I have successfully produced an anthology of my comics called "Hearts, Thorns, and Scales" through Kickstarter. I have created and contributed to multiple zines and art books. I am constantly creating and I am highly driven and self motivated. In the future I hope to find work in the story or character fields of pre-production animation.
Prints of my work are available upon demand.
